COVID-19 vs. The NFL

Football fans across the nation exuberantly rejoiced when President Trump helped to reinstated football. The scare of COVID-19 seemed alleviated and an unnecessary assumption that COVID-19 would no longer be a factor was soon debunked when the Chief’s vs. Patriot’s game was delayed. When the Patriot’s starting quarterback, Cam Newton, tested positive for the coronavirus and the Chief’s backup quarterback Jordan Ta’amu also tested positive, forcing the NFL to make the executive decision of postponing the game.

Many questioned, however, how a four-day delay could make a difference when the incubation period is over twice as long. However, this didn’t stop the two teams from going out there and giving it their all. The Patriots caused the Chiefs, the former Super Bowl champions, to play at their best and to rise victorious, after having maintained a twelve-game win streak. In their 26-10 victory over the Patriots, Chief’s Head Coach Andy Reid stated, “We made plays when we had to make plays… and we can learn from this. We have to do better in a lot of areas, but it’s tough to win in this league and it’s tough to beat the Patriots in any situation.” On the contrary, Bill Belichick, notoriously known for his victorious prowess, reviewed his team’s loss in a similar way “We had some opportunities tonight (and) weren’t able to take advantage of them. You can’t give a team like that those kinds of opportunities… Turned the ball over four times. Had too many penalties.”
Many football fans have grown worrisome after this COVID-19 scares, and many fantasy football managers feel the same. Fantasy football is an online program where anyone can create a league with friends or interact with new people online. Within this league they draft players and once they have a full roster drafted from varied teams, they compete based on the performance of their players. A player testing positive for COVID-19 can mean an inactive roster spot, and depending on timing and your opponent’s drafted players you most likely won’t be able to fill the spit with an adequate player. A loss can come costly in a turbulent year like this, so hopefully, the players maintain the proper precautions and CDC protocols resulting in a safe remainder of the season.
