In this year’s election on November 5th Americans rushed to cast their votes in the Presidental
2024 race. With the two parties desperate to out do the other the final decision would come down
to swing states.
Swing states are simply defined as states which could play a key role in elections and in this
election it couldn’t be closer to the truth. This year the pressure fell upon the following seven
states; Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nevade, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania.
To first understand the importance of swing states one has to first understand the electoral
college system. Designed to prevent urban areas from overruling suburban areas the electoral
college has a designated amount of votes given to each state based off of population. The more
people living in your state the more electoral votes the state will have.
The most famous of the swing states this election was Pennsylvania which holds 19 electoral
votes. Known as apart of the democratic blue wall Pennsylvania has proved to be a difficult state
for republicans to win. Donald J Trump however turned the tide by flipping and winning the
state. NBC News reports that trump won with a 50.4% over his opponent Kamala Harris who
ended with a 48.6% in the traditionally blue state.
Trump would go on to win the rest of the battleground states in a mass landslide which resulted
in the House and the Senate being controlled by the Republican party. The Republican party
once again has taken the reins.
