Straight from Paris to the TKA stage! The production of the British version of the musical “Amélie” arrives at the Page Family Center for Performing Arts in March, with the opening night on the 24th, and preparations are in full swing for the show.
The musical tells the story of Amélie Poulain, starred by Olivia Higgins, an imaginative girl that goes through trials and tribulations during her childhood, with her father believing that she faced heart defects, he keeps her from interacting with the outside world, leading the girl to create her reality inside her mind. As a young woman, she ends up trying to find the way to her dreams and happiness in the city of love, working as a waitress in the “Café des 2 Moulins”, where she opens the door of a new life; making connections to other people and opening her heart to the world of life opportunities available to her, even finding love in the way.
The show is divided into two acts, containing ensembles of singers and dancers staring at famous songs of the show, such as “Times Are Hard for Dreamers” and “Stay”. The first act starts around 1975, and it explores her difficult young life, growing up and moving out of the home to work as a waitress in the center of Paris, the characters and the setting are presented, and it also shows her finding of love through an eccentric man named Nino. The second act, on the other hand, is more focused on the development of Amélie’s relationship with Nino and the other characters, and as said by Lua Soares, who plays Suzanne, “It gets deeper in her way of finding love in everything she has”.
The rehearsals for the show started at the end of January, and the cast seems to be very excited to be part of the show and able to deliver another great musical in the TKA theater, as stated by Mikayla Smith, one of the singers of the show’s ensemble, Amélie sticks out from other productions because due to its “sense of depth to it and the beautiful hidden message”. Eduarda Dias is an international student from Brazil in her second year at The King’s Academy. She is a senior and involved in many organizations beyond J-Club, such as being a manager at The King's Corner Coffee, the vice president of the International Student Council, and an active member in Future Business Leaders of America, Key Club, and Diversity Student Union. Her passion for learning about other countries and cultures is what leads her to explore journalism as a tool to share different perspectives with others, using writing as a fun way to expand her horizons. She has a great excitement for music, playing the guitar, and the keyboard, and being a part of the school’s choir. In her free time, Eduarda writes poetry, watches soccer games, and tries new restaurants. She believes that through writing, we can change the world, even if only a small part of it since by showing the differences we can understand how amazing is to be surrounded by people from distinct countries, backgrounds, and stories. During her life in Brazil, Eduarda traveled to over ten different countries and learned to speak three different languages. Her biggest quality to contribute to the paper is being a fierce leader. Eduarda Dias is honored to be the 2022-2023 editor of the Journalism Club and is excited to embark on this journey.
